After mapping all public toilets run by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on its application ToiletSeva, a private agency through PMC has organised a clean toilets contest to encourage cleanliness and proper use of public toilets across the city.
“The mobile app has registered 1,183 PMC-run public toilets on its service and submitted a detailed report on their existing status in the phase one. Now, phase two of the initiative that has been launched will help maintain the toilets,” said Amol Bhinge, a NRI who is the founder of ToiletSeva app.
There are over 10,000 subscribers of the app which also has the option of rating public toilets, he said, adding that the response to ratings is not much and will increase only if more people use the app by subscribing to it.
The clean toilets contest is to create awareness and motivate citizens to keep public toilets clean. “The ToiletSeva app will help PMC maintain public toilets well so they should promote ToiletSeva as an official technology partner,” Bhinge said, adding the PMC should display and maintain PMC ToiletSeva QR code in all civic toilets.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Kunal Khemnar said PMC will benefit greatly from the technology. “We will get feedback on toilets and this will help us maintain them. It will help keep toilets clean which will enhance PMC’s reputation,” he said.
There will be awards for 60 toilets across the city in 15 ward offices and the selected toilets will be provided liquid soap and other cleaning agents from private companies.
Khemnar said PMC has spent around Rs 19 crore in maintaining public toilets in the last one year and is planning to make a sufficient budgetary provision for next year.
