PMC issues health advisory for mandal goers

With crowds thronging mandals, civic body urges people to take necessary precautions against air-borne diseases.

THE PUNE Municipal Corporation (PMC) has asked visitors thronging the mandals during the Ganeshotsav to take specific steps to ensure that there is no spread of any kind of diseases during the festival season.

The PMC said, in a press statement, during the monsoon season, the city witnesses a surge in swine flu cases and therefore, it is necessary that the visitors take proper precautions and are aware of the symptoms of the disease.

“It is necessary for citizens to be aware of precautionary measures so that they are not infected with H1N1 virus. Any person with swine flu symptom should immediately take treatment for the same,” the PMC has said in its release.

The symptoms of swine flu include fever, bad throat, cough, sneezing, bodyache and headache. Those with symptoms of swine flu should stay away from crowded places and avoid public contact.

People have been urged to approach the doctor for treatment, it said, adding that diabetic, heart patients and pregnant women need to take extra care to ensure they don’t get infected, said PMC in a statement.

The visitors should wash their hands regularly, eat healthy food, consume fruits and vegetables with Vitamin C, avoid smoking, get adequate sleep, drink sufficient water and use tissue paper while sneezing and coughing. The PMC urged people to avoid handshakes, spitting in public places and not to take medicines without doctor’s advice.

Meanwhile, the civic body has made the necessary arrangements for Ganesh immersion at 32 ghats in the city by putting barricades for safety, appointing life guards and light arrangements. Also, it has created 53 artificial tanks, two wells and a canal.

The civic body has installed 73 special containers and 131 garbage bins to collect biodegradable waste. A total of 250 life guards have been appointed to keep a round-the-clock watch at various locations where the Ganesh immersion is done.
