After one arm of the flyover on Ganeshkhind Road was opened for the public on August 20, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to start the construction of a grade separator and connecting ramp arm from Senapati Bapat Road to the flyover at Pune University junction to further ease the traffic flow on the busy stretch.
“The contract of Rs 48 crore for the construction has been awarded for the proposed work of grade separator at Pune University Chowk and connecting arm from Senapati Bapat Road to the double-decker bridge at University Chowk on Ganeshkhind Road,” said Municipal Commissioner Naval Kisbore Ram in the approved proposal of the project.

Dinkar Gojare, in charge of the civic project department, said the work can be started any day now, but the PMC, along with the city police, will have to do a site visit for traffic diversion to mitigate the inconvenience to the public.
The construction of the arm from Senapati Bapat Road to the flyover will begin only after providing ample space for the vehicles to commute, and the work of the grade separator at Pune University junction will begin only after the second arm of Ganeshkhind flyover is opened, he said, adding that it is to ensure there is less traffic on the road below it.
“Most of the traffic will be diverted through flyover, then the grade separator work will be started, which will ensure there is not much of inconvenience to citizens. The grade separator will be 7.5 metres wide and 440 metres long. It will be heading from Shivajinagar to Aundh, skipping the Pune University junction,” Gojare said.
The project also includes the construction of a connecting arm from Senapati Bapat Road to the double-decker bridge. The approaches for the flyover will be reinforced with an earthen wall. The connecting arm with a 152 metre length and 7.5 metre width will have an approach road of 87.50 metre length.
The Pune University junction has been facing huge traffic chaos due to the ongoing Metro and double-decker flyover project. “The grade separator will further ease the traffic situation in Pune University Chowk on Ganeshkhind Road and will provide a seamless journey to Aundh from Shivajinagar,” Gojare said.

The under-construction flyover is being constructed by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The flyover arm from Shivajinagar has been opened to the public, while the arm from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan is almost complete and will be opened for the public soon.
The flyover, along with the grade separator, will ease the traffic situation at the Pune University junction and the Ganeshkhind Road, he added.
