Now those littering in open in Pune will be fined Rs 500 as PMC raises fine amount

In an attempt to improve its ranking in  Swachh Survekshan, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Tuesday increased the fine for littering in open from Rs 180 to Rs 500.

The PMC was ranked ninth in 2022 as against fifth in 2021 in the Swachh Survekshan ranking of clean cities.

“The civic administration is working hard to improve its performance in  Swachh Survekshan  conducted by the Union government. There are measures being taken for improve cleanliness,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Kunal Khemnar.

The PMC has been spending lots of money for collection and scientific disposal of waste generated in the city, he said adding the Union government team visits the city for survey and also the citizens participation in the survey plays major role in scores in the Swachh Survekshan.

The civic administration has been keeping close watch on chronic spots in the city where the garbage is dumped in the open, said officer of civic solid waste management department.

The PMC recovered a fine of Rs 1.66 crore from 37,152 residents in 2023 for various reasons, including littering in public.

A total of 30,129 residents were fined in the year and a total penalty of Rs 95,65,028 was recovered from them.

“If the city wants to be clean then there should not be dumping of waste in the open.So teams have been constituted to take action against citizens littering in open place,” Khemnar said.

“The PMC has already started taking action against citizens littering in open place. The penalty on the citizens need to be increased to bring a check on littering of waste. Thus, the PMC which was penalising Rs 180 for littering in open has now proposed to fine of Rs 500,” he added.

The proposal to increase the penalty has been approved by PMC and is being sent to the state government for its nod before its actual implementation, he added.
