Painting contractor dies in Pune by suicide over unpaid bills; builder booked

Based on a complaint filed by the deceased's wife Shakuntala, a first information report (FIR) was lodged against the builder, at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station on Sunday.

A painting contractor died by suicide at a lodge in Katraj area of Pune city, over bills unpaid by a builder. Police identified the deceased as Chandar Piraji Mohite (56), a resident of Yenpure Nagar near Bharati Vidyapeeth.

Based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s wife Shakuntala, a first information report (FIR) was lodged against the builder, at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station on Sunday.

Police said the accused builder had been given a contract to paint three newly-constructed buildings. The accused had allegedly promised to pay Rs 10.5 lakh and give Mohite possession of an apartment.

Mohite had then taken a loan and completed the painting work, but the builder allegedly did not give any money or an apartment to him. As a result, Mohite killed himself at a lodge in Katraj ghat area on Saturday.

Senior police inspector Rahulkumar Khillare said the deceased left a suicide note in which he named the accused builder.

Police have booked the accused builder for abetment of suicide, under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections of the SC & ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. Further investigation was on, the police said.
