ICMR-National AIDS Research Institute (ICMR-NARI) observed World AIDS Day, 2023 (December 1) with the theme ‘Let Communities Lead!’ Multiple events were planned on December 1 and 2 to raise awareness of HIV infection, prevention, care and treatment.
An official statement issued on Saturday said throughout the events, the theme reverberated, highlighting the critical role that communities play in promoting change and battling HIV/AIDS.
An ‘Open House’, ‘Street Play’, and ‘Debate Competition’ were planned for all the visitors.
Other activities included laboratory visits, a visit to the HIV museum at the institute, the display of posters with information about HIV/AIDS, and a panel discussion with experts to address questions from the public and students about infections of HIV/AIDS.
‘Street Play’ performances by Bharathi Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) Nursing College, Pune, and Sadhu Vaswani College of Nursing, Pune were also held on HIV/AIDS prevention and myths related to HIV transmission. A thought-provoking Debate Competition on the topic, ‘Sexual and reproductive health education in schools should be revamped’ was also organised.
Dr Smita Patterson, Principal, Podar International School and Dr Sheela Godbole, Director, ICMR NARI were the judges for the debate.
Nearly 2,600 students and teachers visited ICMR-NARI, Bhosari Campus on December 1 and 2.
There were visitors from 36 institutions like high schools, junior colleges, medical colleges, nursing colleges and general public from Pune city and rural areas.
The institute’s laboratories for Serology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Virology, microbiology, and Drug resistance were visited by all attendees. All the technical and scientific staff shared the information in a very simple and lucid manner on various tests, including those for HIV, viral load, CD4/CD8 estimation, and STIs.
