A unique certificate course in ornithology that aims at promoting conservation of birds and habitats with a scientific understanding has completed 20 years this year. Over the years more than 3000 participants from various walks of life have been students of this course and from December 4 the 20th ornithology course will commence in the city.
Recognized as a credit course by Savitribai Phule Pune University, the course will be conducted till February 19 at Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute , Dr Satish Pande, founder of the ornithology course and director of Ela foundation said.
“We have had people from diverse walks of life- teachers, engineers, artists, writers, police personnel, chartered accountants and others,” Dr Pande said. The course has a duration of two and a half months and includes field visits to sea-coast mangroves, forests and the field station of Ela foundation for bird mist netting and others.
The course covers topics like bird flight, migration, feeding, breeding and nests, bird anatomy, bio acoustics and others. Topics like owl and vulture conservation, raptor studies and reducing bird populations are among other areas that are addressed by the course.
“As an outcome of this course , more than 15 bird field guides and other books have been published while the country’s sole Indian Owl Festival is in its fourth year,” Dr Pande added,.
