Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) spokesperson Anish Gawande has spoken out against the demonisation of Bangladeshi immigrants. On the backdrop of the Mumbai police arresting a Bangladeshi national for the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan, anti-Bangladeshi immigrant rhetoric has increased among politicians and on social media, Gawande said.

Gawande, in a post on instagram said, “Ever since news of Saif Ali Khan’s attacker being Bangladeshi was released in the media, we have seen the most vicious and vile dog whistling that paints all immigrants as evil criminals. I am – and have been – deeply uncomfortable with this discourse. I refuse to participate in it, even though it might mean scoring a few quick political brownie points against the Modi government.”

Emphasising the need for politics of care, Gawande said that the attack on Khan can be condemned without demonising all Bangladeshis or immigrants. “We can call for better law and order without losing our humanity. We can all choose to lead with compassion, even when it is difficult,” he said.

MP Supriya Sule spoke empathetically about the situation of immigrants at a press conference in Pune on Tuesday. Responding to a question about whether India should implement a policy similar to US President Donald Trump’s declaration of a border emergency due to migration, Sule said, “You might remember the Manipur incident, the reporting is very less now. But border issues are always challenging. All countries at every border of ours are undergoing an economic crisis…immigration, migration these are inevitable issues around the world. The topic should be thought about and policies should be formed with much seriousness and sensitivity.”

She added, “Nobody migrates out of choice. Nobody wants to leave their house and travel seven seas willingly, but because of economic reasons, their families, and their own financial conditions, these decisions have to be made. These incidents keep happening but everyone should come to the correct decision in a sensitive manner.”
