NDA cadet’s death during swimming practice session: Cops record statements of instructors

Police said so far, no negligence was observed, but the inquiry is on to know whether the training procedure was properly followed during the swimming practice session.

The Pune city police on Friday recorded statements of eye witnesses in connection with the death of an 18-year old first term cadet at the National Defence Academy (NDA), who lost his life during a swimming practice session late Thursday afternoon.

NDA authorities have identified the deceased as Cadet Aditya D Yadav. According to a press statement from the NDA issued through the Defence PRO, Pune, “At 5pm on October 23, an incident occurred during the organised swimming practise for weak swimmers under supervision of instructors.”

According to the NDA, the trainees were swimming along the width of the pool and Yadav was suddenly found motionless on the surface of the water. Two lifeguards immediately jumped in and pulled him out.

“Prompt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and medical aid was given on site and then at the Military Hospital, Khadakwasla. Unfortunately the cadet could not be revived,” said the release.

“The National Defence Academy extends deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The civil police and next of the kin have been informed. A formal enquiry has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the accident,” said the NDA statement.

Meanwhile, after receiving information about the cadet’s death from the NDA authorities, a police team initiated an inquiry into the incident. An accidental death report was lodged at the Uttam Nagar police station.

Senior police inspector Mohan Khandare said they have recorded statements of NDA instructors and cadets who were present at the time of the incident. Yadav hails from Nalanda in Bihar and his family members were on their way to Pune.

Earlier, in a suspected case of suicide, an 18-year-old cadet identified as Antriksh Kumar Singh was found dead at his hostel room in NDA on October 10. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh (UP), Antriksh was a first-term cadet from Charlie Squadron at the NDA. He had joined the academy in July this year.
