Chief of Naval Staff Admiral DK Joshi will deliver the Gen BC Joshi Memorial Lecture on Monday. Joshi will speak on – Indian Navy- Maritime Power for National Prosperity at PUMBA Auditorium at University of Pune at 3.30 pm.
Gen BC Joshi Memorial Lecture is an endeavour jointly instituted by the Headquarters Southern Command and University of Pune. It is an annual lecture in honour of the memory of Gen BC Joshi in recognition of his contribution to higher education and furthering the University of Pune – Armed Forces interaction programme.
The University of Pune,in 1998,named one of its gates General BC Joshi Dwar.
General BC Joshi,born on December 5,1935,was commissioned on December 4,1954 in the 2nd Lancers Regiment of Armoured Corps. He was Southern and Western Army Commander between 1990-1992 and took over as Chief of Army Staff in 1993. He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 1982 and Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) in 1991. Kumaon University conferred a honorary doctorate on him in March 1994. General BC Joshi passed away on 18 November 1994,while in office, said a press release issued by Press Information Bureau,Defence Wing.
Gen BC Joshi played a significant role in establishing a number of institutions under the aegis of Army Welfare Education Society (AWES). He was instrumental in raising the Army Institute of Technology (AIT) in 1994. Gen BC Joshi Army Public School at Pithoragarh was established with some of the best infrastructure. Gen Joshi also played an important role in the development of society in general, said the press release.
