Maharashtra and Pune are expected to get rain over the next few days as the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, like its onset, has been delayed across the country.

K S Hosalikar, head of climate research and services at Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, told The Indian Express Tuesday that the formation of low-pressure areas over Bay of Bengal would not only result in rainfall for Pune and the central part of the country but also delay the withdrawal of the monsoon from both central and southern part of the country.

The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon has started from Rajasthan along with other parts of the country’s northwest and west central parts, nearly 10 days after the expected date of September 17. The monsoon withdrawal from Maharashtra would have started by October 5-10, and that is also set to get delayed, said Hosalikar.

The main reason is a low-pressure area formed over the northern Andaman Seas and adjoining parts of the Bay of Bengal by around September 30. This will result in widespread rainfall in the central and southern parts of the country. Pune and Maharashtra are also expected to see rainfall during this period.

Hosalikar said rain would mostly be recorded in the evening or afternoon, accompanied by thunder and lighting. Over the last few days, many parts of the state and the country have reported rainfall, helping to reduce the precipitation deficit.

While Pune is expected to receive some showers, a heavy to cloudburst-like rain is not likely. The Pune district has received 797.6 mm of rainfall against the 913.3 mm of precipitation it was expected to receive. Ahmednagar, Sangli, Solapur, Beed, Hingoli and Aurangad have reported a 20-30 per cent rainfall shortage.

The delayed withdrawal, Hosalikar said, would help improve water levels in dams and soil moisture content. It will also come in use for the rabi season later on.
