On the hometurf of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a dig at the veteran leader in the presence of members of the Pawar family, that included Ajit Pawar and his wife Sunetra, who is contesting the Baramati Lok Sabha seat against sitting MP Supriya Sule.

“There is a ‘bhatakti atma’ (wandering soul) in Maharashtra. If it does not manage success it spoils others’ good work. Maharashtra has been a victim of it,” said Modi, hitting out at Sharad Pawar without taking his name.

“This game was started by the same leader 45 years ago. It was just for his own ambition that Maharashtra has always been an unstable state. As a result, several chief ministers could not complete their full term,” he said.

“He didn’t just play this politics with the opposition, but within his own political party and now in his family,” he added.

He said that the leader tried to unsettle the saffron alliance government in 1995 and insulted voters in 2019. He said the same leader also wants to unsettle the country, so it is time that Maharashtra has a settled government under the Mahayuti alliance led by Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadanavis and Ajit Pawar.

This is the first election rally of Modi in the hometurf of the Pawars since the NCP’s split. A few months ago, a private awards function was held where Ajit Pawar had shared the dias with Modi in the presence of his uncle after the split in NCP.

The rally was organised for BJP Pune candidate Murlidhar Mohol, Sunetra Pawar of NCP for Baramati, Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil of NCP for Shirur and Shrirang Barane of Shiv Sena for Maval.

Modi criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his impractical ideas for the progress of the country. “Youth leaders are leaving Congress and saying Maoists have taken control of the Congress party,” he said. “Congress is planning to impose inheritance tax on wealth, which means your hard earned wealth will be looted by them.”

He said they were looting when citizens were alive and now want to loot them after their death. He sais it is because of the Constitution by Babasaheb Ambedkar that Modi, a son of the poor, became prime minister, he said.

“Congress has always insulted Ambedkar. For Modi, the Constitution and Ambedkar are no less than God. It is the BJP who started celebrating Constitution day, but the Congress opposed it. This speaks about how the Congress thinks of Ambedkar,” Modi said.

He added that it was the BJP which had developed places related to Ambedkar, while the Congress and INDIA bloc were stabbing the Constitution.

He said that it was experts from COngress who prepared the Constitution and BJP or RSS men were not involved in it . He said the basic gist of the cConstitution was that there will be no reservation on the basis of religion.

“They want to disturb reservation on the basis of Constitution and Parliament to provide the same for the Muslim community,” he said, adding that the Congress wanted to implement the Karnataka model of reservation, wherein muslims were declared OBC overight. He said the INDIA bloc should keep in mind that he will not allow this (giving reservation on the basis of religion) till he was alive.

He said that the Congress rule’s speciality was that terrorism flourished as terrorists moved about freely, but all of that stopped in the last ten years. Modi said that the Congress floated the theory of Hindu terrorism to cover up their failures. “We banned PFI and put their activists behind bars, but Congress is taking its help for the election,” he added.
