DJ Janaka Selekta from San Francisco, who performed in the city on Friday, blends music from across the world on the dance floor
During his early twenties, much against his wishes,Janaka Selekta accompanied his mother for a music concert by Ustad Zakir Hussain. The performance became a defining moment for Selekta who preferred only electronic music till then. I found a new direction for this passion for music to play with sounds from across the world, says this 41-year-old DJ,currently settled in San Francisco. He was in Pune for a performance at Swig Bar & Eatery,Koregaon Park,on Friday.
In 1996,he collaborated with world musicians from Pakistan,Bangladesh,Middle East and India to form a band called Dhamaal. With different music styles coming together to form a unique blend, the band performed across the UK. Slowly, the members drifted away from the band due to various reasons, and Selekta moved on to chase another goal. It was a time of the electronic boom in the UK. I heard many DJs perform but I wasnt able to find the sound I was looking for. Then my friend urged me to go and make the sound if I cant find it. And I did so, recalls Selekta.
In 2007,his career branched out into two parts DJing and producing music. While,as a producer,he worked with different bands across the world and helped them release albums in a variety of genres,as a DJ,he experimented with different genres to make new sounds to thrill his audience. I started DJing in the late 90s. Over time,I started taking up genres such as dubstep, drum and bass and other happy tones which could be manipulated to deep sounding sounds as well. My aim was to introduce people to the dancefloor,to spin out music that would get people to come and dance, says Selekta, who does not believe in sticking to one genre of music while playing his DJ set.
His latest venture is an album in collaboration with an Indian band called Bodzrobots. The group has just finished recording a video for a song Burn it up,which will release on VH1 and MTV on May 10. When we were working on this album, there were many people who told us that it would not be successful. The song is about proving all those people wrong who try to break your confidence. The audience,I feel, will relate to the song well because everyone goes through such experiences, says Selekta. The album titled Bodzrobots, features a list of songs with a reggae flavour which have been written, sung and recorded over a period of three years.
