The city police have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against gangster Nilesh Bansilal Ghaiwal and 30 of his aides.
Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) Anant Shinde said MCOCA has been invoked against the Ghaiwal gang. Ghaiwal, who was arrested on June 20,is involved in seven serious crimes, including three murders. He was absconding after the murder Sachin Kudle,a member of the rival Gajanan Marne gang,at Dattawadi on May 9.
On a tip-off,a crime branch team nabbed Gahiwal at his residence in Kothrud. Police had so far arrested 27 persons for their alleged involvement in the Kudle murder case.
Ghaiwal and his gang members had gunned down Kudle and injured his younger brother Atul alias Pappu Kudle (24),also a member of the Marne gang, around 12.30 am on May 9,in the vicinity of Dattawadi police chowky. Police said that Ghaiwal gang fired six bullets during the gangwar had lasted about half an hour. Police said Pappu was the main target but he escaped with a bullet injury on his hand. Assistant Police Commissioner (crime) Prabhakar Patil is investigating the case.
It may be recalled that Ghaiwal was earlier a close aide of Gajanan Marne. Later,Ghaiwal and Marne parted ways, after which the former started his own gang. .
The first public display of their feud took place on May 13,2009 on Paud Road, when Marne gang attacked Ghaiwals friend Sameer Patil. In June 2009,the Marne gang had attempted to kill Ghaiwal in Kothrud. On March 29 this year,Ghaiwal had opened fire on Sumit Naik (20),a Marne aide, in Kothrud.
