Bund Garden police have obtained permission from a magisterial court to arrest Shaikh Imran Mehboob Qureshi,24,for giving false information to police about a security threat to the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple.
Qureshi reportedly admitted that he had lied to police in a bid to get treatment for injuries he received after he fell off a train while travelling in an inebriated state.
On Wednesday, the Anti-Terrorism Cell (PATC) of Pune city police moved an application in the court of judicial magistrate (first class) S R Nimse, who allowed police to arrest Shaikh. Police had registered a case against Shaikh at Bund Garden police station.
Suhas Nadgauda, senior police inspector in-charge of PATC,said Qureshi has been arrested for a thorough investigation.
Even though he admitted that he lied about the terror plan,we cannot leave him without thoroughly investigating the case. We will inquire if anyone instigated him to make the false claim.
Last Friday,Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel found Shaikh of Bopodi injured near the railway tracks at 11 pm in Daund. He had head injuries. GRP officials took him to hospital.
Shaikh allegedly revealed the names of two Pakistani terrorists to GRP officials saying they attacked him and dumped him near the tracks after he refused their request to plant a bomb in the temple in return for Rs 20,000 to 30,000. Following this, police stepped up security across the city. A through check of the temple was conducted. Police later learnt that it was a hoax.
It was revealed that Shaikh wanted to be treated for injuries and thus posed as a victim of a terror plot, police said on Sunday. Bund Garden police booked Shaikh for providing false information. Police constable Sharad Jadhav of the Crime Branch lodged a complaint. PI Suhas Nadgouda of the Pune Anti Terrorism Cell (PATC) is investigating the case.
According to the complaint,Shaikh was injured after two friends assaulted him at Daund. From the hospital,he called up police control room on Saturday and said that a bag containing a bomb was planted near the famous temple. Policemen swung into action. The entire area was cordoned off, causing inconvenience to citizens.
Crime Branch officials verified the information and said Shaikh was lying. Shaikh,a scrap vendor based in Bopodi, had left Pune by train and was drunk, causing him to fall off the train. Nadgouda said Shaikh thought nobody would take him to hospital and as he did not have money and decided to cook up the story.
