Man runs out of luck,lands in police net after snatching gold-plated chain

Alert citizens chase and beat him up before handing him over to cops.

A chain-snatcher ran out of luck on Tuesday when he first snatched a Bentex chain,expecting it to be gold,from a woman in Kothrud and was later caught by alert citizens who beat him up and handed him over to police.

The suspect has been identified as Yogesh Dnyaneshwar Nikam (36),a resident of Shastri Nagar in Kothrud. The victim,Mithul Digambar Chohte (24),a resident of Anupam Complex in Kothrud,has registered an offence in the case.

Police said the incident took place around 8.30 am when Chohte was going to the market. The suspect attacked her from behind,gagged her,pushed her down and tried to flee from the spot after snatching her chain worth Rs 1,000.

Chothe raised an alarm and the alert passersby chased and nabbed the suspect. After beating him up,the citizens handed him over to the police.

Meanwhile,four more incidents of chain-snatching were reported from across the city. In Kothrud,a few youths snatched a gold chain from Shalini Shankar Sabde (70) of Swaroop society while she was walking along the road near Gananjay society area around 9.15 am. Sabde lodged an offence at Kothrud police station.

In another incident,motorcycle-borne youths snatched a gold chain worth Rs 70,000 from an elderly pedestrian,identified as Vasundhara Ramesh Deshpande (72) of Aranyeshwar in Sahkarnagar area. Deshpande lodged an offence at Sahkarnagar police station.

In a similar fashion,two motorcycle-borne youths snatched a gold chain worth Rs 25,000 from Smita Sudhir Joshi (53) near her residence at Shridhar Nagar in Chinchwad around 10 am. She lodged a complaint with the Chinchwad police station. All the three incidents took place on Tuesday.

On Monday evening,22-year-old Laxman Navnath Landge of Ambegaon was arrested by Kondhwa police for allegedly snatching a chain from Reshma Mahesh Waydande (20) near Kedareshwar temple in Gokul Nagar. Police said Reshma had gone to see her cattle near the temple when the suspect allegedly snatched her gold chain worth Rs 20,000 around 6.30 pm.
