Man held for assaulting traffic cop, elderly man in Hadapsar

One person was arrested for allegedly assaulting a traffic police personnel on duty and an elderly man, and pelting stones at cars in Hadapsar, police said Sunday adding that the accused was suspected to be mentally unstable and in an inebriated state.

The incident, a video of which was shared widely on social media, happened on Sunday when the accused allegedly slapped the police personnel attached to the Hadapsar traffic division who was performing his duty at Raskar Chowk near the Mundhwa bridge.

According to police, the accused also allegedly assaulted an elderly man and two others who tried to help the traffic personnel, police said.

After receiving information about the incident, a team of Hadapsar police station reached the spot and took the accused into custody.

Police have booked him for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant and citizen, under sections 121(1), 125, 117(2), 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

“The accused appears to be mentally unstable. He was taken to Sassoon Hospital and a medical opinion is sought. Further investigation is on,” said Assistant Police Inspector Deepak Barge, the investigation officer.
