A speeding Audi car knocked down a two-wheeler near Birobawadi on the Daund Patas road in Pune district Saturday, leading to the death of the rider who was a local farmer. Following this, angry villagers set the vehicle on fire.
Police have identified the deceased as Nehal Appasaheb Gawade, 26, a resident of Patas Birobawadi in Daund. His uncle Pramod Wayal, 53, lodged the first information report (FIR) in the case at Yavat police station.
Police said Nehal had gone to the local temple in Birobawadi to offer prayers on Saturday morning. While returning home on his two-wheeler, a car hit him from the front side around 8 am. The impact was so severe that Nehal died in the accident.
The car driver Avinash Chandrakant Gholap, also a resident of Birobawadi in Daund, was also injured. An offence was lodged against Gholap under sections 304(a), 279, 337 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Soon, villagers gathered at the accident spot and set the car on fire. A police team rushed to the spot after receiving information and brought the situation under control.
Police Inspector Hemant Shendge of Yavat police station said the process was underway for lodging two FIRs – one against the car driver for causing the death of a youngster in a road accident and another against the local residents who set the car on fire.
