Life convict at Yerawada Prison attacked with nail, two undertrials booked

The convict sustained serious injuries to his neck and head and was admitted to Sassoon General Hospital for treatment, officials said.

A 52-YEAR-OLD inmate of the Yerawada Central Prison undergoing a life sentence was attacked with a nail by two undertrial inmates following a dispute over sleeping space in their barrack. The convict sustained serious injuries to his neck and head and was admitted to Sassoon General Hospital for treatment, officials said.

The incident took place on the night of September 7 in Barrack Number 6 of Circle Number 3 of the high security Yerawada Central Prison. A First Information Report in the case was registered at Yerawada police station on Monday by a prison officer posted at Circle 3 in a supervisory role. The injured inmate has been identified as Sanjay Bhikaji Kapde (52), who has been sentenced to life in a case of murder and armed robbery. Police have booked two undertrial inmates Bharat Vishal Rathod and Mohammed Gulab Shaikh on the charges of assaulting and grievously injuring Kapde.

As per the FIR, the inmates were confined to their respective barracks around 6.30 pm as usual. Following a dispute over sleeping space, Rathod and Shaikh attacked Kapde with a nail on his neck and on the head above the ear and also punched him multiple times in the chest. Following the incident, Kapde was admitted to the ward for prison inmates at the Yerawada Central Prison and is currently under treatment. Officials said that the doctors have given a report of serious injuries to Kapde. Police have booked Rathod and Shaikh under BNS sections pertaining to voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons among other provisions.

In June last year an undertrial inmate at the Yerawada Central Prison in Pune was attacked by three other undertrial inmates over a suspicion that he provided information about them to the members of a rival gang. In February last year, at least a dozen undertrial inmates at the Yerawada Central Prison attacked an on-duty jailer who suffered injuries to his face and a hand fracture. In December 2023, an undertrial inmate lodged at the Yerawada Central Prison was murdered by a group of four other undertrial inmates who fatally attacked him with a pair of scissors and a piece of metal hinge. Officials said that the attack was a fallout of a past rivalry. Last year, a CCTV network comprising over 812 cameras installed inside the Yerawada Central Prison became functional.
