Costume designer Neeta Lulla is set to bridge the gap between theory and practical experience in the fashion world

What happens when a legendary filmmaker joins hands with an ace fashion designer? In this particular case, the two bring together their knowledge of the film and fashion industries to train many others. After bagging National Awards for her work in historical films such as Jodhaa Akbar (2009) and Balgandharva (2012),Neeta Lulla is testing new waters.

Having done a fashion-designing course from SNDT University,Lulla has often conducted lectures, seminars and workshops to train aspirants from various colleges in India for over 24 years.

Earlier this month, she launched her fashion academy — Whistling Woods – Neeta Lulla School of Fashion (WWNL) — in association with Subhash Ghai’s academy,Whistling Woods Mumbai. “Formal education in fashion sets a robust foundation of knowledge of the industry. It also guides a student through his/ her core area of expertise and specialisation. I have been working with Ghai for a long time and mulling over setting up an academy which produces industry-ready fashion designers,” says Lulla.

Noticing a number of fashion academies mushrooming in the metros as well as in Tier II and III cities, she recalls how she herself had little choice when she was looking for a fashion design courses to enroll in — after her finishing school. Even though these academies provide fashion-design enthusiasts with a wide range of options,Lulla shares her concerns that they don’t bridge the gap between theory and hands-on experience.

“I would like my students to understand their strengths and creative abilities,so that they can pursue their ambition with focus, work diligently and make successful careers,” she says.

She will be heading the academy and claims to have tied up with big names in faculties in fashion education as well as some successful professionals from the fashion business to train her students.
