These days,we hardly find any artist who does not believe in showcasing his/her art work. But Sukantu Basu, eminent painter from West Bengal, lays emphasis on quality rather than quantity. I don’t believe in frequent exhibitions. I am working continuously and will put forth an exhibition as and when I am ready and only if any art gallery approaches me, he explains.
Basu is in town to exhibit his paintings till November 27 at Waves Art Gallery. The Waves Art Gallery had approached me long back and as my work was ready,I thought of displaying my work here, he says. The exhibition features 21 paintings which are a compilation of his work of the past three or four years.
Born is Mufsal,West Bengal,in 1929,Basu has been involved in every aspect of art, right from learning to teaching, creating as well as conserving. He was also sent to Italy by the Indian Government to train in art conservation. It was a great learning experience. This gave an opportunity to serve the National Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art in the capital, opines Basu.
A student of Government College of Arts and Crafts,Calcutta,Basu by now is the only artist who has first-hand experience of pre-independence,post-independence and the neo-colonial evolution of art. He has been an indispensable part of all these eras. In his early days,he was greatly attracted to the works of Dutch painter and etcher Rembrandt.
The artist pleased with Pune’s art culture. Pune is the cultural city of Maharashtra. I have met a couple of young artists. Their work is very promising, some are good and some are excellent. The city’s culture reflects in their work. One has to be honest to ones work. Budding artists should learn about the materials they are handling, smiles he.
