Following recent serial bomb blats in the city,Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) along with police will identify sites for installation of CCTV cameras in the cantonment. The proposal for CCTVs was put forth by the elected members of the cantonment board.

Executive Engineer of cantonment board Arun G Godbole, said,“Cantonment board is preparing estimates for installing CCTVs.”

He said CCTVs were set up at different places at the time of Ganesh festival last year but were later removed.

“We had hired a private agency to install CCTVs last year and they were paid for the usage of camers during Ganesh festival. But now we plan to install CCTVs on permanent basis.”

The cantonment members had stressed the need for CCTVs as Khadki area is more sensitive owing to number of military institutions and ammunition factories here.

“Although CCTVs don’t help prevent terror attacks, the clips captured by them can be a clinching evidence in tracking these cases,” said cantonment member Suresh Kamble.

Another cantonment board member Sunil Jadhav said,“The Khadki area is strategically important as there are many defence training institutions and factories here.”

Even as the board will approach police to identify key spots for CCTVs,cantonment members stressed that there are some spots that cannot be ignored.

KCB member Kamlesh Chaskar said the cameras should be installed at places such as Khadki bazar, religious institutions and some government offices. He said CCTVs should also be properly maintained.

“The maintenance of CCTVs is very important. Either police or cantonment board should be responsible for maintaining them,” he said.
