Both Karnataka and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) from Orissa,earned hard-fought wins in their respective boys quarter-final matches to set up an interesting semi-final clash in the 35th Junior (under-20) National Hockey Championship,being organised by the PDHA (Pune District Hockey Association),under the IHF (Indian Hockey Federation).
The team from Karnataka held their nerve to quell a spirited challenge from Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) by pulling off a 4-2 win in an engrossing battle at the Major Dhyanchand ground,Pimpri-Chinchwad,Nehrunagar,on Sunday morning.
Poonacha MG came up with three crucial goals. He opened the scoring by converting their 1st penalty corner in the 21st minute and then added two more in the 41 st and 63 rd minutes. Nikin Thimmaiah was responsible for the other goal for the winners. The IOC forwards who were kept in check by the Karnataka defenders managed to reduce the margin by converting two of their 10 penalty corners earned,through Sampath Kumar (52nd minute) and Gagandeep Singh.
Meanwhile,SAIL continued their fine run of form as they rallied from a one goal deficit to edge out Punjab and Sindh Bank (PSB) Academy 2-1 in a keenly contested encounter.
After both the citadels survived some anxious moments,the Punjab lads forged ahead when Jasjit succeeded in the finding the net from their first penalty corner in the 13th minute. SAIL however neutralised the lead when Mikhail Barla in flash tapped in a rebound following their second short corner in the 33 rd minute. SAIL eventually broke the deadlock when Sunil Toppo scored from their fifth and final penalty corner.
In the girls quarter-final,Chandigarh overcame Jharkhand 2-1 while Uttar Pradesh trounced Pune District Hockey Association (PDHA) 8-1.
