The joint controller of the legal metrology department, Pune division, has been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe at his office in Yerwada, the Pune unit of the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said on Monday.
The ACB identified the accused as Lalit Beniram Harole (55) and said that he was arrested after an inspector posted at the legal metrology department in Islampur lodged a bribery complaint against him at the Pune ACB office. Harole holds a ‘Class 1’ position, the ACB added.
A press release issued on Monday by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Nitin Jadhav of ACB, Pune, stated that along with Islampur, the complainant had an additional charge of two more offices in Karad and one in Satara. Harole, the divisional head of the complainant, allegedly demanded a monthly ‘hafta’ or bribe of Rs 4,000 per office, which amounts to Rs 16,000 bribe per month, the ACB said.
According to the ACB, Harole demanded Rs 15,000 more from the complainant for store calibration at the Diamond Sugar Works Company, which comes under the jurisdiction of the legal metrology department’s Karad 1 office.
The ACB laid a trap and allegedly caught Harole red-handed while accepting the bribe amount at his office in Yerwada. DySP Sudam Pachorkar is investigating the case.
