Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Vice-Chancellor Santishree Pandit heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘renewing faith in the Indian Constitution’ while virtually addressing the conference ‘75 Years of Indian Constitution-Reflections, Challenges and the Road Ahead’ at SNDT University in Pune. Pandit also expressed support for the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) currently being carried out in Bihar by the Election Commission of India.

Pandit said, “We are celebrating 75 years of the Indian Constitution today and we have to give Prime Minister Narendra Modi credit for this, because he has renewed our faith in the Constitution. Till now we had forgotten what is and isn’t there in the Constitution.”

“The other point I want to keep before you is that democracy was not brought to India by the British. Democracy is as old as the Indian civilization…usually we give credit to Great Britain. But in the 8th century we have the Uttaramerur inscription of the Cholas which proved we had decentralised administration,” she continued.

Referring to the Bihar SIR she said, “We have always had our democratic institutions strengthened in India and Parliament and electoral reforms. Recently in Bihar and many states electoral reforms are going on. It is extremely necessary that ghuspaithiye (intruders) coming to India should not have rights to vote in our elections. They can completely change the way the result comes because you know that numbers matter in democracy.”

On the same day as her speech, the Supreme Court ruled that people whose names had been excluded from the draft voter list could file an appeal online by submitting either their Aadhaar card or any of the 11 documents listed by the Election Commission.

Speaking about social justice, Pandit said, “Another point is that decentralisation, panchayati raj, all this we have supported. And expanding social justice and equality–You must have seen that the Constitution has come up with very good suggestions for the latest problems of social justice and equality. To resolve issues of equal opportunities, entrepreneurship, and other social issues, we have always had the Supreme Court and others give very enlightened decisions.”

Pandit remarked that the Indian Constitution was the best in the world. “According to me it is one of the best Constitutions written with the brains together of the best legal opinion all around the world, as well as the leaders of our freedom movement,” she said.
