The industrial city of Pimpri-Chinchwad received very heavy rainfall on Sunday evening with the rain gauge recording as much as 114.5 mm rainfall in a short period of about an hour. It rained from 4 pm to 5.15 pm, officials with India Meteorological Department said.

Interestingly, Pune district, including Pune city, did not receive significant rain barring Narayangaon where 34 mm rainfall was recorded. “The rain fell over a short period in Pimpri-Chinchwad area. The rain was a result of intense localised convective activity and shows that monsoon is strengthening in the region as coastal Maharashtra too has seen more rainfall in the last few days,” said Medha Khole, Scientist (F), IMD Pune said.

She said that south-westerly winds are strong and coastal parts of Maharashtra and hilly areas of Pune district will receive heavy rains in next few days.

“Coastal areas like Konkan and ghat areas of Pune district will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall as per the models,” she said.

The intense rain caused water logging in many areas in Pimpri–Chinchwad. Among the worst affected were Bhatnagar, Milind Nagar and Anand Nagar areas. Roads in several parts were so flooded that motorists were forced leave their vehicles on the road and wait for the water to drain away.
