Inspired by crime serials, a 36-year-old history-sheeter constantly changed his appearance and location to evade arrest. He would borrow cell phones from unsuspecting passersby whenever he needed to use one. After fleeing the Pune court premises in July just after being convicted in an attempted murder case, he was finally tracked down and arrested by Pune Police three months later.

Anmol Atul Jadhavrao (36), was arrested on Monday by a team from Shivajinagar Police Station from Wagholi area of Pune along with another history sheeter from Ahmednagar, Akshay Sanjay Hampe (30). Jadhavrav had serious offences registered against him, including attempted murder and molestation. A trial against him in a case of attempted murder registered at Chaturshrungi Police Station in 2012 concluded in Pune court in the first week of July earlier this year. On July 9, the court pronounced him guilty. The team from Chaturshrungi Police Station was called to the court to take custody of Jadhavrao — who was at the time on bail while the trial was on.

When the team reached the court premises, Jadhavrao was nowhere to be found. It came to light that he had managed to flee from the court premises before he could be taken into custody.

He had taken advantage of the presence of a large number of people in the courtroom and the fact that he was standing near the door, an officer said. An offence was subsequently registered against him at Shivajinagar Police Station and a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against him.

A team from the police station had been working on some leads and continuously gathered intelligence about Jadhavrao. On Monday, constable Sachin Jadhav obtained credible intelligence that Jadhavrao was travelling from Ahilyanagar to Pune in a four-wheeler. Senior Inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi, in-charge of Shivajinagar police station, appraised senior officers of the input and a trap was laid for Jadhavrao’s arrest. The police team intercepted a vehicle in Khandvenagar area as per inputs received. Two persons travelling in the car were detained and were identified as Jadhavrao and Hampe. The two were subsequently placed under arrest.

“Investigation revealed that Jadhavrao watched a lot of crime serials. Inspired by modus operandi used in some of these serials, he repeatedly changes his appearance, including style of clothes, hairstyle and beard. We also found out that he changed his location multiple times during this period and stayed at various places including Nashik, Mumbai, Satara, Sangli along with various places in Pune including Paud, Mulshi and Haveli. He never used a cell phone and always used to borrow phones from unsuspecting passersby if he had to use one. However, we still managed to get concrete inputs and nabbed him,” said an officer from Shivajinagar police station.

Officials said that he will undergo the sentence awarded in the attempted murder case and will face charges of obstruction of legal apprehension in the case of fleeing from the court premises.
