Participants from 15 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries who had attended a three-day workshop on Rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge in developing countries HRD and technology transfer have recommended that rainwater harvesting (RWH) programmes be incorporated in the curriculum of school students and teachers.
They said since education is vitally linked with social development and social transformation,RWH programmes must be linked with the curricular,field work and research and development activities of students and teachers at all levels primary,secondary and tertiary.
Agreeing with this recommendation,the Maharashtra Knowledge Commission Limited (MKCL) proposed to support such educational and development programmes by establishing e-education and information networking in which many countries and their educational and developmental institutions can collaborate and participate.
This is one of the 10 recommendations,called as Pune recommendation,drafted during the workshop organised by the NAM science and technology centre and hosted by MKCL and Indian Consortium for education transformation (I-Consent) in Pune.
Some of the other recommendations are to introduce facilitation rain centres in developing countries that can coordinate RWH-related activities by providing data,technological guidance and institutional mechanism,need for international funding from agencies World Bank for undertaking RWH and groundwater recharge programmes. These recommendations will be sent for consideration of the governments and agencies concerned in the respective NAM countries.
As part of the workshop,the participants also visited the village Hiwre Bazar in Ahmednagar district to study its success.
