IMA calls for restraint in reporting cases not related to sex selection

The Indian Medical Association on Friday has called for restraint in reporting cases against doctors that are not related to sex selection.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday has called for restraint in reporting cases against doctors that are not related to sex selection.

Citing an instance where the Maharashtra Medical Council had issued a ‘warning’ to 13 doctors that they should comply with the provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act,the IMA has cautioned newspapers and electronic media against blowing issues out of proportion.

Dr Mohan Joshi,Secretary of the IMA,Pune chapter and Dr Jayant Navrange,in charge of the medico-legal cell of IMA in a statement pointed out that a rule had been enacted in 2002 to register each sonography machine.

In 13 cases, the doctors were fined Rs 1,000 each by a competent court for delay in registration of their machines in April 2002.

Now,after a decade, the PMC has sent this information to Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) as a reply to MMC’s letter on the strict implementation of the PC-PNDT Act.

According to Navrange, the MMC acted upon the PMC action against 13 doctors. Show cause notices were issued and doctors replied stating that their licenses were renewed subsequently.

The matter was not related to sex selection, but registration of the ultrasound machine.
