IITM’s extreme weather forecast: Hot days ahead

While World Meteorological Organisation had declared 2015 as the world’s hottest year on record by a wide margin, an assessment of the summer temperatures may see this year too among those with higher temperatures, said scientists.

While the year 2015 was the country’s warmest year on record since 1901 and the October-to-December season was the warmest, summer this year too may turn out to be equally warm. In its extreme weather forecast for the next 20 days, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has said western parts of the country were all set to see high temperatures while hotter conditions prevailed over the southern peninsula of the country in the first half of the season.

“The western parts of the country, including Pune, are all set to see temperatures soar. It is a common phenomenon to see a hotter year after every El Nino year and so this year too will be warmer,” said a scientist from IITM.

IITM issued its first extreme forecast on March 18 and it would be doing so after every five days considering the strong heat wave conditions in the country. The forecast of a fortnight is given to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This being the first year for summer extreme temperatures, IITM has stated that the March month has seen exceptionally higher temperatures. While extreme weather events have been given during monsoon from 2011, this is the first year they are doing so in the summer season

“It is not only the southern region and the western region, the western disturbances are likely to cause above normal temperatures in the northern parts of the country during the first half of March and near normal during the subsequent months while the northeast parts of the country too were likely to see above normal temperatures in the last part of the month,” said the scientist.

While World Meteorological Organisation had declared 2015 as the world’s hottest year on record by a wide margin, an assessment of the summer temperatures may see this year too among those with higher temperatures, said scientists.
