IAF airlifts organs of brain dead woman from Pune to Delhi, transplant saves three lives

The organ donor was a young woman – who, as per official sources, had sustained a severe head injury when a tree branch fell on her while riding pillion.

In a swift and coordinated operation that was carried out with military precision, the Indian Air Force facilitated the airlift of a kidney and liver of a 24-year-old woman from Pune to New Delhi on Sunday.

The organ donor was a young woman – who, as per official sources, had sustained a severe head injury when a tree branch fell on her while riding pillion. The girl was immediately taken to a local hospital on September 17.

However when her condition did not improve, she was shifted to Command Hospital (Southern Command) on September 19.

Here she was declared brain dead by the critical care team of Command Hospital on September 21.

Aarti Gokhale, Coordinator, Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre said the family of the woman consented to donate the organs and due process of allocation of organs was completed.

The GI surgery team of Command Hospital, Southern Command performed the multi-organ retrieval in collaboration with the transplant team of Army Hospital (R&R).

Three persons received the harvested organs. A 59-year-old man, father of a serving soldier, underwent the kidney transplant at Command Hospital while the other kidney and liver was sent to Army Hospital (R & R) for transplant.

On Monday, the Indian Air Force took to X to announce how the IAF C-17 Globemaster from Hindon took off late last night with a team of medical specialists from Army Hospital (R & R), New Delhi. A green air corridor was created for the C-17 aircraft to facilitate airlift of live organs from Pune to Delhi enabling a critical life-saving surgery.

Official sources confirmed that the liver was transplanted in a 60-year-old retired soldier while a 33 -year-old woman – wife of a serving soldier- underwent a kidney transplant.
