Stem cell summit held
The 10th World Stem Cell Summit was held recently in Detroit,USA. Out of the 1200 people participating in the forum,Pune-based Dr Anant Baguls research paper titled ‘Clinical trial using a combination of autologous bone marrow and umbilical cord blood derived blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells in patients with stroke’ was presented. Bagul heads the Chaitanya Stem Cell Centre,a part of Chaitanya Hospital. More than 100 cases have already been treated using Stem Cells,with clinical improvement seen in around 70 per cent of the cases. Stem cells are unique and have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body,including brain cells. They also have the ability to produce more stem cells.
AFMC Lamp lighting ceremony held
The Lamp Lighting ceremony of 39 nursing cadets of the 45th batch of College of Nursing,Armed Forces Medical College was held on October 23 at Dhanvantari Auditorium of AFMC. In his address to the students,Lt General D P Vats,SM,VSM,said,”The Lamp Lighting Ceremony is an important event in the life of a nursing student as it signifies her initiation in to the noble profession of nursing.” He added that nursing requires qualities of selfless devotion,discipline,genuine concern and love for the sick,and this should always be the motto of their service.
Medical Complex announced
The proposed Symbiosis Medical Complex had its bhoomi poojan ceremony at the Symbiosis Knowledge Village Lavale on October 20. In the initial phase,Symbiosis plans to set up a 200-bed hospital. It would also have an Animal Lab and a Simulation Centre for training in Laparoscopic Surgery.
Molecular technology acquired
Punes first molecular technology was acquired recently by Aditya Birla Hospital. The technology detects tuberculosis in just one day. The hospital at Chinchwad has adopted Genotype MTBDR plus & Genotype MTBDRsl assay for the identification of mycobacteria in patients suffering from Tuberculosis.
Jaipur foot camp
Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) has organised a Jaipur Foot camp in Pune to distribute artificial limbs,calipers and crutches to physically challenged individuals. The four-day camp is on till October 29 at the Shashakiya Bahu Udeshiya Apang Sammishra Kendra at Yerwada. Artificial limbs,calipers and crutches will be distributed free-of-charge.
