Green tribunal seeks govt response on burning of tyres during protests

Citing research, the plea stated that burning of tyres produced large amount of harmful and noxious substances.

The western bench of the National Green Tribunal has issued notices to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) chairman and the Maharashtra chief secretary, directing them to file affidavits in response to an application seeking a ban on burning of rubber tyres during agitations. The suit, which was filed by city-based lawyer Asim Sarode and others, had sought a ban on the practice of burning tyres during protests, claiming that the action was detrimental to the environment.

Sarode,in his plea, said,“It was seen that whenever a political party or religious group initiated an agitation, the unfortunate first sight is burning tyres.”

Citing research, the plea stated that burning of tyres produced large amount of harmful and noxious substances. “There are various concerns expressed regarding burning of tyres, which puts human health at risk,” the plea read. Burning of tyres releases poisonous gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, chromium, arsenic, zinc, barium, cobalt, copper, iron, aluminum, manganese and vanadium, which are hazardous to human being,as well as to the environment.

In their plea, the onus was put on the MPCB for turning a blind eye to the issue. Sarode said the pollution control body was responsible for the implementation of the Prevention of Air (prevention and control) Pollution Act,1981. Asking for the court’s direction to both MPCB and the state government, the plea asked for stringent norms, which would outlaw such action during protests.
