At around 6.30 in the morning,at NIBM area, one can sight a group of people filling water in two big tanks, loading it in their four-wheelers. The troupe also carries a few buckets and jerry cans with them and head to the forest areas near Naren Hills and Cloud Nine, two housing societies located on the NIBM Road. Once they reach the location, they divide themselves in group of two people each and water the 500 trees that were planted by them three months back.
It has become a routine for this group for the past three months. They visit these two areas thrice a week on alternate days. The activity was initiated by,an environmentalist,Peepal Bawa.
“We will continue watering these plants until the monsoon arrives. We have already dug pits at the Cloud Nine area for 60 more trees. As soon as the rains are here, the ground will be wet and the mud will be conditioned for planting,” says Karle.
Yogendra Gupta, the joint secretary of the committee says,”The area had only exotic and imported plants which are harmful to people as they cause allergies and cannot be consumed by animals. Thus,we planted native trees to combat with this problem, with our limited resources.”
Karle says that a number of members have started noticing their endeavour and have joined the forum and the green movement recently. Interestingly, the latest one to add to their group, are a bunch of kids who call themselves Eco-Friends. They are students between 15 to 17 years. They come regularly to with us for an hour to water the trees. We encourage them and hope that they take this initiative forward in future,” he adds.
The committee is also majorly into solid waste management and takes steps towards the reduction of usage of plastic in the residential societies. The NIBM Mohalla Committee has meetings once a month with the ward officer, where they raise their issues and try to solve them with the support of the PMC. In the recent past, committee has persuaded PMC to clean the area, create footpaths, provide electricity and develop the NIBM Chowk.
