Actor Sanjay Dutt who is currently out on a furlough will return to Yerawada Central Jail on Wednesday, authorities said. He was granted a 14-day furlough in the first week of October and had got a 14-day extension on medical grounds.
Deputy Inspector General (West Region) Rajendra Dhamane said,Dutts furlough extension ends on Tuesday and he will have to return on Wednesday. Every inmate is given one day for travel and is entitled to only one extension.
The 53-year-old actor, who had surrendered in May after the Supreme Court confirmed his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case for illegal possession of weapons,is currently serving the remaining 42 months of his five-year sentence.
About a week ago, there were reports that the state government had received an application for the remission of his sentence. But Home Minister R R Patil had clarified that no such application was received either from the Central government or his family members.
A jail official said on condition of anonymity,The state government has the power to remit a sentence. But considering Dutts offence,a remission seems unlikely.
