The Anti-Extortion Cell of Pune police on Saturday arrested four history sheeters for trying to extort Rs 5 crore from a Pimpri-based business.
The suspects Sham alias Ramdas Jagtap (33) of Gawli Wada in Chinchwad station,Sameer Devram Kalbhor (34) of Kalbhor Nagar,Chinchwad,Ashvin Agarwal (26) of Mohanan Nagar,Chinchwad and Sanjay Jetharam Choudhary (26) of Nigdi – operated in an underworld style,police said.
Assistant police commissioner (Crime) Prabhakar Patil said a Pimpri-based business dealing in electronic parts of four wheelers and two wheelers received three threat calls on his cell phone between November 19 and 21,demanding Rs 5 crore. One of the calls was made from Dubai,one from a coin box in Hyderabad and one from a local mobile phone. The caller threatened to kill the businessmans son if their demand of Rs 5 crore was not fulfilled. The businessman made a complaint to additional commissioner Anant Shinde on November 22. The anti-extortion cell team led by inspector Kishor Jadhav initiated the investigation into the case.
After investigations revealed that one of the threat calls was made using a Sim card in the name of Agarwal,police nabbed him and after further investigation his three accomplices were also held.
The suspects told the police that 10 days ago they decided at Hotel Anand in Chinchwad to extort money from the businessman. Police are probing how and with whose help the suspects managed to make calls from Dubai and Hyderabad. Investigation so far revealed that a Dubai-based person known to the suspects made a call from Sharjah. There are more persons involved in the extortion plan. We have launched a search for them, said inspector Jadhav.
The police recovered a country made revolver,a mobile phone and a car from the suspects. Jagtap was earlier booked by the city police in three body offences,Agarwal in three offences,Kalbhor in a case of arm act and Choudhary in one offence. Police are probing if the suspects had connections with any underworld gangster. Police sub inspector Bharat Kindre is investigating the case.
