Pune-based Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute (BARTI) has become a co-traveller in this year’s Palkhi pilgrimage to spread awareness about the Indian Constitution. Officials and volunteers, or Samtadoots, of BARTI have so far distributed 300 copies of the Preamble and 25 copies of the Constitution among devotees.

Tejaswini Prashant Kamble, one of the Samtadoots, said, “This Constitution rally is organised to bring the feeling of nationalism and equality among people, so that they come to know about the contribution of Baba Saheb in our society”. BARTI is an autonomous institute under the Maharashtra government, and as part of this initiative, has joined hands with government officials to also engage with pilgrims to make them aware of the values enshrined in the Constitution, apart from handing copies as gifts.

“Many devotees hail from rural areas who have limited awareness of rights guaranteed under the Constitution, so we inform them about it. There are cultural differences in our society, but through such awareness programmes, unity can be fostered and people will choose their rights over religious conflicts,” according to Kamble.

The Constitution drive, which started on June 10, will continue till the end of the Palkhi pilgrimage on June 29.
