While the city continues to battle against erratic water supply thanks to the irregular rains, the Wadia College under Modern Education Society is out with a community water conservation project, the first ever in the city,on their campus. The Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) project, which has been jointly set up by the Hindustan Coco-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCBPL) and the Members of Brotherhood (MOB) is the 400 th project that has been replicated all over the nation and the first in Pune.
Umesh Mundlye, consultant for the project said,The project will be implemented in two stages. In the first phase, the RWH structures have been constructed in five of the campus buildings, which have two soak pits, two water collection trenches and a filtration pit, which will help to replenish the existing well on the campus. In the second phase, which will be constructed soon,a ring well will be constructed along with two channels for collecting water in the playground.
The total cost of the project was Rs six lakh and when fully functional will have a capacity to harvest close to 46 million litres of rain water which will be used by the students and the on campus staff for various purposes. According to M M Andhar, secretary of the Modern Education Society, the water harvested will help in meeting more than half the needs of the campus and will also be a step towards replenishing all the water wasted due to run offs.
