Nearly half of the 850-odd cable operators in the district are under the scanner of the entertainment department for not following following the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) guidelines that make it mandatory for them to register with the local post offices and for not paying entertainment tax.
The errant cable operators have been asked to register themselves with the post offices and clear entertainment tax dues in 15 days or face closure.
“The issue has been pending for the last two years. Our teams are conducting checks. We have some names of errant operators,” an official from the district entertainment department said.

According to officials, the licences of cable operators have to be renewed every year, which has not been done by many of them.
TRAI rules for local cable operators providing services through digital addressable systems (DAS) say that their registration with the head post office before offering services is mandatory and the renewal of registration should be done every year. Rules also say that there is a need to enter into a written interconnection agreement with the multi-system operator whose signal is being carried, besides ensuring that an MOU is signed within 15 days from the date of signing of agreement.
