A 19-year-old BBA student from Delhi was arrested by Pune police for allegedly creating a fake social networking profile of city Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar. Police said he had replied to many messages posted by people on the profile impersonating as the commissioner.
The profile of Borwankar on social networking website Facebook was found out in April. The profile also had a photo of Borwankar. On Tuesday,a team from Pune polices Cyber crime cell picked up Anubhav Bipinkukar Yadav of Fatehpur Beri in Delhi and brought him to Pune. He was put on arrest on Wednesday as he confessed to the crime.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber crime and economic offenses) Sanjay Shinde said,Yadav is a pursuing his bachelors degree in business administration from a reputed management institute in New Delhi. He is originally from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh. He was traced on the basis of the information about his IP (Internet Protocol) address that we got from Facebook. No obscene content was posted on the profile.
Police sources said Yadav had opened a social networking community and police suspect him to have created the profile to promote the community. Officials said further investigation will confirm the motive. Yadav was released on bail after being produced before a court in Pune. The sections of the Information Technology Act under which he was booked are bailable. Shinde said. Speaking to Newsline,Borwankar said,We had come to know that he had replied to many messages that people had posted thinking it was my profile. Police said Yadav had an exam scheduled in the week so was sent back to Delhi.
Yadav was booked under Indian Penal Code Section 419 (cheating by impersonation) and IT Act Sections 66 C and D for impersonation and identity theft. A case in this regard was registered at the Bundgarden police station.
