Delhi cops turn to Pune initiative to manage Games traffic

A web-based traffic information and management tool, developed with the initiative of the Pune traffic police.

A web-based traffic information and management tool, developed with the initiative of the Pune traffic police,is being used by cops in Delhi for managing traffic during the Commonwealth Games. The tool was built by Pune police in collaboration with Janvani at Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) and Pinacle Group. The system was tested for city traffic management during the Ganesh festival.

After receiving information about the system,Delhi traffic police officials got in touch with Pune Commissioner of Police Meeran Borwankar. Subsequently, the trials on the Delhi traffic flow were done from Pune and Delhi. “The system is based on Google maps. What we have developed is a tool that shows the overall situation of traffic in a given area. Based on data from various sources like traffic constables and the global positioning systems in buses,it tells about the flow of traffic,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil said.

The Delhi police are using the system to inform people about the changes in routes for Games. “Delhi has an SMS-sending module in place which they are using for informing people about the traffic routes. Looking at the developments that we are carrying out in the system,Pune will have a similar information dissemination system by January,” Patil said.

The system will be thoroughly administered by trained technical persons,Patil said.

“This will remove the usual snags that websites have,” he said. Kishori Gadre of Janvani said,“Another major advantage of this system is that data would get collected every hour. This data will help form policies about the traffic management and zero in on problem areas.” India Computes is working with Pune cops on the system.
