On the occasion of Independence Day,Dr. Chetan Deshmukh (Medical Oncologist),Deenanath Mangeshkar and Ruby Hospital and cancer survivors came together to celebrate ‘ Freedom From Cancer a theme derived to signify various successes made in the fight against Cancer. The objective was to spread the word that Cancer is curable and one can lead a normal life after surviving cancer. The number of individuals who have survived cancer has considerably increased over the years. Certain adult cancers have a survival rate of 70% or more,while a few childhood cancers may boast of a greater cure rate
Course in oral cancer
The first certificate course for doctors on oral cancer will be held on August 25. Supriya Sule,MP,will inaugurate the course conducted by Muktaa Charitable Foundation under the aegis of Tata Memorial Centre. Experts like Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi,Associate Professor,Head and neck department,Tata Memorial Hospital,Mumbai; Dr Shona Nag,consultant medical oncologist,Jehangir hospital; Dr Nitin Abhyankar and others will speak on the occasion.

Writing is a good tool for self healing,Prof. Tsippy Byron and poetess from Israel said while interacting with students at the Department of English at University of Pune. Writing is not only an art or skill but in modern days full of stress one can look at it as a preservative medicine. “Just like few other arts such as drama and music,writing also proves therapeutic, Byron said.Literature creates new zones of language and thus new zones in our self-consciousness and self awareness that leads to an overall mental growth, Prof Tsippy said. Nagpur-based Bhakti Ghatole,a retinoblastoma patient who has had both eyes removed surgically,is now setting an example for students in the state. She is among the state toppers of the SSC Board examinations. Using Braille and software like Jaws and Abrar mobile audio software,she now aspires to join the civil services. These software are available for students in English,Hindi and Marathi.
