A ball-like firecracker found by some children exploded near Khadki Bazaar police chowky on Saturday morning injuring four children and their grandmother,and causing tense moments till a bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) confirmed it was a firecracker.
According to Khadki police,Shubham Shailesh Kamble (12),his brother Suhas (7),sister Swapnali (10) and cousin Hritik Satish Kamble (9),of Juna Bazaar area in Khadki,found a ball-like firecracker while playing around the Shivaji statue in Khadki area. At around 10.30 am,the children came to Buddha Vihar near Khadki Bazaar police chowky and tried to break it with a stone. One of them was carrying a lighted incence stick that came in contact with the explosive material,causing a loud blast. It created panic for sometime. Police took the injured children to Sassoon hospital.
A BDDS team comprising assistant sub-inspectors Raosaheb Hodge,Sudhir Chopde,constables Jayandra Dhotre and Ravi Sapkal collected samples from the spot.
BDDS confirmed it was a firecracker. The children were discharged from Sassoon in the afternoon, said senior cop Vilas Gawli.
Santosh Kamble,the childrens uncle,said,The firecracker caused burns on Shubhams hands,Hritiks legs and Suhas waist. Some burning particles fell on Swapnalis face and on their grandmother Vatsala Kamble.
This came a day after a drive against unlicensed firecracker stalls and bursting of crackers after 10 pm. DCP (Zone-I) Dnyaneshwar Phadtare,who holds additional charge of Zone II,said that action was taken against 140 people in his jurisdiction. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-III) Dnayneshwar Chavan said they shut 105 firecracker stalls running without licence.
