With health concerns of the urban population scaling new heights,Zumba is a rigorous but fun option to stay in shape, she says
If the tag line itself is- Ditch the workout, join the Zumba party’,you know you’re in for some fun. Zumba- an amalgamation of dance and fitness- brings together the basic principles of aerobics and dance to make working out more exciting and effective. Developed by Alberto Perez in 2000,the dance form is not very well known in India but has garnered tremendous support in other parts of the world for its exuberance and sheer energy. The dance form incorporates Latin and International music and dance movements from forms like salsa and rumba into the fitness routine.
This scenario is set to change however, because Smeeta Shitole, who is the only licensed Zumba instructor in India,is all set to start Zumba classes in the city for people who want to enjoy their exercise. Shitole has been in the fitness industry for the past 15 years and has done her Zumba certification with Alberto Perez himself. About Zumba she says, It is such a wonderful way to keep fit. The movements are different every time which ensures that no one gets bored. We follow an interval training program which uses music of different intensities for maximum benefit. Although touted as a dance form that incorporates moves from other Latin forms of dance,Zumba is relatively easy to pick up,even for the people who claim to have two left feet.
About the fitness benefits Shitole says,Zumba is scientifically designed and uses interval and resistance training to maximise caloric output, cardiovascular benefits and body toning. It can help to burn 500 to 1000 calories in an hour.”
Neeta Godambe, who has been taking Zumba lessons with Shitole for a month, says, It is a fun form of exercise that never gets monotonous. Unlike other rigid dance forms, here one can just let loose without worrying about posture and grace. After every work out, instead of being exhausted I tend to feel more energetic. Another Zumba enthusiast, Prashant More adds,My preferred form of exercise used to be aerobics but now I’m hooked onto the Zumba. It’s exhilarating, fun and it works wonders for your body.
