Cops arrested for taking bribe

The Pune unit of the state Anti-Corruption Bureau on Tuesday arrested police inspector Maya Bankar of Shivajinagar police station and her writer head constable Rajendra Raut for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.

The Pune unit of the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested police inspector Maya Bankar of Shivajinagar police station and her writer head constable Rajendra Raut for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.

According to the ACB,Yakub Hussain Shaikh (54),president of Shahi Masjid Trust in Shivajinagar since 2007,filed the complaint. Police said another Shivajingar resident Iqbal Ismail Shaikh had filed a complaint application against Yakub at Shivajinagar police station that Yakub had allegedly constructed a compound wall around the religious place illegally.

The complaint was verified and inspector Bankar of the crime section of Shivajinagar police station was told to look into the case. Bankar allegedly called Yakub,saying that a complaint was filed against him. She told Yakub that he would be arrested under Section 151 (3) of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 to avoid arrest.

Yakub filed a complaint against Bankar at the ACB,Pune office on Monday. Yakub told the ACB officials that Bankar had been demanding bribe from him for the last one week. Yakub reportedly told the ACB sleuths that the wall around the Masjid was constructed as per the instructions of government authorities as a precautionary measure during the Ganesh Festival.

Meanwhile,Bankar had called Yakub and Iqbal to the Shivajinagar police station today. After Iqbal gave in writing that he had no complaint against Yakub,Bankar and his writer Raut demanded the bribe money. Yakub said he would give the money within one hour and went to the ACB,Pune office.

The ACB team comprising deputy superintendents B M Kale,Dilip Jagdale,inspectors Prakash Shinde,Kanchan Jadhav,Ashwini Satpute and others laid a trap on the spot and nabbed Raut red handed while allegedly accepting Rs 5,000 as per the instructions of Bankar at the police station around 4.45 pm.
