Kanitkar award to Jadhav
The anniversary of Shankarrao Kanitkar,the founder of Progressive Education Society (PES),was celebrated at the Balgandharva Rang Mandir on Monday. Every year,the Kanitkar Puraskar is given to individuals who have given valuable contribution to their respective fields. This year,the award was given to noted economist Narendra Jadhav. Chhagan Bhujbal,deputy chief minister was the chief guest for the function. Mayor of Pune Mohansingh Rajpal was the guest of honour. The additional commissioner of Mumbai central region Sadanand Date was felicitated by the hands of Bhujbal.
Cultural concoction
Muktachhanda,a cultural event with innovative themes will be held at Fergusson College having a blend of entertainment and insight. The event flags off on January 29 at the campus and explores the theme,To Lead a Good Life. As part of the inaugural programme it has arranged a thank you campaign,a greeting card making extravaganza and so on. These greetings will be sent to the Armed forces. Some of the proceedings include a discussion with environmentalist,Anand Karve,danseuse Yogini Gandhi,photographer Sandesh Bhandare,Milaf a musical concert by Pt Rajan Kulkarni, Pt Bhavani Shankar and Pt Ramdas Palsule and so on.The evening of January 31 will also witness a fun filled talk with Paresh Mokashi,director of Harishchandrachi factory.

Dreams 2 Reality has organised a program,Tarunaicha Manatla that wil have poets from across 15 colleges pre senting their own poems together on the same stage. This will be a thematic performance comprising of two more segments. Collegian theatre personalities,Om Bhutkar and Parna Pethe would be reading poems of renowned poets such as Kusumagraj,Suresh Bhat,Govindgraj and others. Renowned Marathi actor Jitendra Joshi and well known director Sunil Sukthankar will be present as chief guests for the event. The 12th International Model United Nations Conference by Rotary RIIMUN 2010 will bring students from across the globe together in India,offering a unique opportunity for international collaboration on a larger scale,and expecting around 600 delegates to be a part of this conference. The conference will be held from February 18 to 21 at Sri Balaji Societys educational campus at Wakad. Students and working professionals within the age group of 15-25 can participate and registrations are open till January 31. Registration details are available on http://www.riimun.org. The best young minds are expected to don the role of diplomats of their respective countries,making them view different issues from the varying perspectives of their country.
Helmet drive
RIMS International School and Junior College conducted a helmet drive across the city yesterday. The event was organised by the institute to promote awareness and a sense of civic responsibility. Ranghnath Gaykar,Senior Police Inspector In-Charge,Kondhwa presided over the occasion and gave away helmets to the school staff,to flag off the event. Principal N Madkikar and Director Museeb Rais addressed the students in regard to the need of wearing a helmet and spreading this message. The campaign was conducted at three destinations where students appealed to the riders who were not wearing helmets by handing over informative flyers and roses.Banners and placards were held to create the relevance and importance of helmet-wearing and saving lives. Students ranging from Class I to XI were active participants and they campaigned at three different venues including near RIMS school,Jyoti restaurant chowk,Kondhwa and Lulla Nagar chowk .
Conference on Energy
Power On 2010-a national conference on alternative energy sources was flagged off on January 22 at Sinhgad Academy of Engineering. The event spanned over 3 days,and had models created by the participants that displayed creative means by which energy could be saved in day-to-day chores. Also,over a hundred papers were selected for the event; all concentrated towards the multifarious methods by which one can conserve energy. Some of the models put on display included one manually driven mixer,which could save on the electrical energy and still produce a glass of juice. Other models were based on bio-gas plants,fuel cells,photo-voltaic cells and solar cells. Each of these concepts were well understood by the participants who expressed novel ways to harness these energies.
