Love coffee and desserts equally deeply? Post-meal dishes that combine the charms of both are taking the city by storm.
When coffee blends with a dessert,it sure makes a lot of people very happy. The Jamaican Mousse Cake in Linger On is just divine. Its my favourite dessert without doubt,” says Bhakti Lala,a regular at the cafe in Baner. There are quite a few cafes and restaurants in the city that are experimenting with coffee desserts on their menu. The Jamaican Mousse Cake is the second most popular dessert among our customers; this contains coffee, cinnamon and dark rum. If in a day we sell 50 desserts,20 comprise of this coffee dessert, says Ansar Karani, the outlet manager of Linger On. As the name suggests, one of the main ingredients in these desserts is coffee.
Another dessert that has blended famously with coffee is Tiramisu. Although a layered Italian dish by origin,it has been adapted into various kinds of desserts and the most common adaptation is made with layered cake, vanilla cream, chocolate powder, coffee and liqueur. This particular dessert is the easiest to find as most restaurants that specialise in Italian cuisine. Places like Il Fungo Magico,Squisito,Arthurs Theme and Flag’s restaurant, all serve brilliant variants of Tiramisu. “The Tiramisu is one of the most popular and ‘happening’ desserts here. As Italian cuisine is well-known in the city, people already know about this dessert. It is a light dessert, and therefore has a lot of takers,” says Jatin Nangia, unit head of Flag’s.
Coffee desserts are worth trying because they tend to hit that perfect middle ground between a dessert that is too rich or sweet, and one that is more subtle but delicious all the same.
Mousse Hunt
Here is what you need to do to make one’s own coffee dessert: Whisk the cream with a hand blender until peaks form in it.
Melt the chocolate over a water bath (double boiler) in batches and add before it cools to the cream.
Add the coffee and blend.
Whisk the egg whites in a separate utensil until they gather some firmness.
Add the egg whites to the cream mixture and blend once again.
Add 2 teaspoons rum or half a teaspoon of vanilla essence.
Refrigerate for 4 hours and the coffee mousse is ready to be served.
It can be garnished with coffee beans, chocolate swirls, dry fruits and whatever else you think may add colour to the mousse.
The recipe serves 3 people.
