Power theft suspect sets himself ablaze
A suspect in a power theft case allegedly tried to set himself ablaze when a police team from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) visited his house in Solapur Bazar Camp to arrest him on Thursday. Laskar police has identified the suspect as Jayesh Ajay Yerellu (38). Sub-inspector Ganesh Dhende of MSEDCL police said,We had gone to Yerellus house to arrest him in a case of power theft. As we reached his house,he went inside and locked the door. His uncle who was present there called him out but he did not respond. After some time he came out screaming as he had set himself ablaze. One of our constables tried to catch hold of him but he managed to escape from the spot. He suffered minor injuries. Senior inspector Sushma Chavan of Laskar police station said,We have registered an offence against Yerellu under Section 309 of the IPC for attempt to suicide. We have launched a search to nab him.
Bribe: CA sentenced to one-year RI
A special CBI court on Friday sentenced a chartered accountant to one-year rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine Rs 5,000 for accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 for releasing the refund order of income tax (I-T) department to one of his clients. Special CBI judge convicted Vijay Pralhad Agarwal,a resident of Yerawada,who was arrested in the case in December 2009. As per the information given by the CBI,complainant Rahul Kirte of Yerawada had taken the services of Agarwal for filing I-T returns in 2007-08. Kirte got a communication from the I-T department that the refund order of Rs 16,000 had been issued. However,Agarwal did not hand over the sum to Kirte and got it renewed when it expired after three months. CBI special prosecutor Vivek Saxena said,Agarwal approached Kirte and asked him to pay Rs 1,000 to release the refund order from the I-T office. We have examined five witnesses in the case.
