As the world gets ready to celebrate the first-ever World Circus Day on April 17,Pune-based Rambo circus has organised a number of events that will unveil the legacy and facets of this entertaining entity.

“We want to display the glory of circus to all those who believe that circus no longer exists. We have organised a rally from the Bishop’s School in Kalyani Nagar to Gold Adlabs and back,” said Sujit Dilip, owner of Rambo Circus.

Starting 10 am,the rally will include trailers showcasing various artistes in traditional attire presenting their art forms. With over 150 artistes, including jokers, the rally will be led by a band,Russian,Nepali and African circus artistes. “On the occasion,we will felicitate those who have contributed towards circus in India. Successors of Vishnupant Chhatre, the founder of circus in India,Vilas Dhotre, grandson of Damu Dhotre, veteran circus artist,Janki More, daughter of Shyamlala Shirodkar who authored the book Circus along with Chintamani Shelar, the trainer of birds and animals in circus will be felicitated during the event,” said Dilip.

Initiated and conceptualised by World Circus Federation,Pune is the only city from India to participate in the circus day celebration said Dilip. “The reason why Pune has been selected is that it is the cultural capital of the state and a witness to the transitions that have taken place in the world of art. We have organised free shows for orphans, mentally and physically challenged children. We want to revive the lost glory of circus. Abroad, circus is still a popular form of art,but in India the art is dying because of people’s changed preferences, restrictions on the use of animals and child labour issues. With this,we want to convey to the world that circus is alive in India.”
