A well-equipped computer centre for visually challenged students was inaugurated in the city on Monday. A collaborated effort of Amway Opportunity Foundation and Pune School and Home for Blind Trust (PSHBT),this is the ninth in the series after Delhi,Kolkata,Ahmedabad,Hyderabad,Jaipur,Chandigarh,Trivandrum and Patna.
The computer centre aims at upgrading the knowledge of computer and modern technology of the visually challenged children.
With 10 computers, the centre has a special talking software designed specifically for the visually impaired students that facilitates in hearing the function of a particular key/ command simultaneously with the click of the key, thus enabling the visually challenged person to hear what they are typing.
Located at 14/17,north Main Road,Koregaon Park, the centre will provide basic computer education to visually challenged school children. Speaking at the occasion,Achinta Banerjie, vice president,Amway India (West) said,These children will be empowered and self-dependant in the future. No business can succeed in a society that is weak.
Achieving inclusive and sustainable development can be realised only if different sectors of the society work together harmoniously. PG Pawar, chairman,PSHBT said,It is important in todays times to be technically strong. This initiative will surely help these visually challenged children to learn technology and upgrade their skills at the same time.
We have used similar software earlier for learning microsoft office. With the new software,I will be able to master MS Word,Excel and Power Point. I am looking forward to regularly visiting the place, said Vikrant More,a class VIII student.
